Two inspirational stories of young people working to protect the preborn caught my attention this week.
The first story comes from Noblesville, Indiana, and involves a high school girl who wanted to form a pro-life group at her school but was denied. In addition to the denial, this young girl, known only as E.D., faced ridicule from “several” teachers on social media, with some calling her “bigoted” and “misogynistic.”
The student stated: “I wanted to start this club to inspire like-minded students to advocate for our most vulnerable and point students to resources designed to uplift them in their time of need. . . . I knew some people would disagree with me, but I never expected to be attacked online—especially by my teachers.”
The student and her family sued the Noblesville School District and won a partial victory this week, as she is allowed to form the group while the case moves through the court system.
The second story comes out of a Catholic school in Denver, where a dedicated middle-school teacher named Kira Weiland runs a group called Lions for Life for the school’s K-8th grade students. This prayer group gets together before school once a month to pray the Rosary for an end to abortion and for the protection of preborn babies. One of the students says of the Rosary: “We hope our prayers will help [mothers] decide to choose life.”
Weiland is proud of her students and says: “The fact that they are willing to get up early, come in and pray for babies in the world and that they care deeply about that enough to come early. It’s really that the rewarding part—is seeing them living out their faith. . . . We’ll have the little kids and then all the big kids, and big kids lead the Rosary.”
As the saying goes, out of the mouths of babes…
We can learn three very important lessons from these students and their stories.
We will face adversity, but we can overcome it.
As Christ said in Matthew: “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”
Apparently one of the concerns the Noblesville principal had was the fact that the girl presented him with a flyer that had young people holding signs that read “Defund Planned Parenthood” and “I am the pro-life generation.” It doesn’t take much thought to know where the principal and teachers who posted on social media are coming from.
The young woman in Noblesville should feel safe in school, not attacked, especially not by teachers who don’t understand the sanctity of human beings. To call her bigoted and misogynistic is not only short-sighted but ignorant.
Kudos to E.D. for persevering despite such adversity!
Children need strong leaders.
The principal and the teachers in the Indiana story show us the kind of influences we’re up against. That is why we need strong, moral leaders like Kira Weiland and like the countless other pro-life leaders we have today. These people do not get enough accolades for helping educate our students, teaching the faithful, and training others in the faith.
We must work every day to protect human beings.
A child is a unique human being from the very moment the sperm fertilizes the egg. No amount of vitriol will change that scientific fact. Those who are pro-abortion will not give up, so we can never give up. In fact, we cannot let up for even one second.
These news stories give us a glimmer of hope for the younger generation, but we must never let our guard down, and we must continue to teach the sanctity of all human beings every opportunity we get.
Giving voice to the voiceless while protecting the vulnerable is the most important job we will ever have.
