PRO-LIFE BASICS: I want to vote pro-life. Should I choose the lesser of two evils?

Let’s imagine the presidential primaries are over and now we have a choice between Hillary and, say …McCain. Neither is pro-life; neither will help reverse Roe v.Wade. BUT we know that Hillary will be much more detrimental to the morality of the country and will be against the sanctity of marriage and will be promoting rampant feminism in its form that is most demeaning to God’s plan for women. We know one will cause more decay of the country than the other. Do we vote for a “no-chance” person, which will basically give Hillary a better chance, as we aren’t concentrating on defeating her no matter what—or do we vote for her opponent, just to defeat her? My husband and I are debating this question. We KNOW we don’t want a Clinton back in office, but what, as Catholics, do we do? If Republicans are too divided, the Democrats will win on their unity alone. —Kathleen

Dear Kathleen,

Since American Life League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we do not endorse or oppose any candidates for public office. However, you are giving me a hypothetical situation and I will give you a real answer to the dilemma. When some pro-lifers argue that it is acceptable to “vote for the lesser of two evils,” our movement is in deep trouble. There is no such thing as the lesser of two evils. In other words, evil is still evil. I for one could not, in good conscience, vote for anyone who favors denying the most fundamental right any human being has—the right to life—and I would vote for someone who understands that.

I note that you mention a “no-chance” person, but I wonder if you realize that, for the past 35 years, the babies have had literally no chance of being protected as persons under the law. Too many pro-lifers keep talking about regulating the way the killing is done rather than ending it. Each preborn child is a person deserving of equal protection under the law and, to this very day, their status is precisely the same as it was when the Supreme Court handed down Roe v. Wade. The pro-life movement’s status quo is appalling. —Judie Brown

THANK YOU! God bless you for your answer to my voting question. I was being a little bit of “the devil’s advocate,” as I said my husband and I were debating. Your point about no lesser of two evils is well taken. I am afraid that the situation I described will happen and I hope that faithful Catholics will remain faithful and take the Lord to the polls with them. God bless you, Judie! The babies deserve a voice and you are doing that! —Kathleen
