PRO-LIFE BASICS: I receive many questions about the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception, but the most frequent is this two-part question: Why don’t you stop talking against contraception? Don’t you know that contraception leads to fewer abortions?

I always stick to the meat of the questioner’s problem with American Life League’s position on contraception. ALL’s position happens to be the Catholic position—and therefore the morally consistent position and easy to get, if one wants to get it! That’s why my answer is always the same.

A couple using contraception is telling God to mind His own business. They have decided that, although they like the idea of having God involved in their marriage, they don’t actually trust Him enough to surrender to His will and His plan for their relationship. Such couples do not want children and believe that contraception is acceptable because it seemingly accommodates their ego-centered desires.

But the fallout from such a narrow perspective is sad and, frankly, deadly:

  • First of all, most popular contraceptives can and do kill preborn children during their first week of life.
  • Second, such chemicals and devices can wreak havoc in the bodies of women who use them, by causing sterility, disease and even death.
  • Thirdandmostimportantly, whether one uses a chemical or a device such as a condom, the “no” to God that contraception represents is the equivalent of a “no” to babies. And so, when a pregnancy does occur, abortion is often seen as the solution.
  • Couples that contracept are less likely to stay married because contraception eats away at a couple’s relationship like a cancer and invites sterile relationships with others too. And as we know, contraceptive use among the unmarried is at epidemic levels; chastity is out and fornication is in.

There is nothing good about contraception, as you can see. Thanks for asking. Now go out there and fall in love with God—and trust Him 100 percent. The result will be pure joy!
