A Novena for the Protection of Preborn Babies

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 is nearly upon us. As we think about our spiritual mother and how she takes our prayers to the feet of her Son, we cannot help but also think of ALL’s Marian Blue Wave. The Marian Blue Wave is a prayer initiative that encourages people throughout the world to say one Rosary a week for the end to all abortion and the shutting down of all Planned Parenthood facilities.

So, as we contemplate this feast day and how our mother Mary listens to our prayers, we want to focus on the value, worth, and dignity of the developing baby. That’s why we created this beautiful novena to help guide our prayers to our Blessed Mother.

Each day of the novena corresponds to one month of the baby’s growth so that you can watch with amazement as this child gets closer to the wondrous day of birth.

You can start this novena today and finish just before the Assumption, you can start tomorrow and finish on the actual feast day, or you can say this novena anytime! But as you pray this novena, allow its words to help you reflect on the growing baby, on the mother who may be experiencing a large range of emotions, and on the beauty of every human being.

Novena for the Protection of Preborn Babies

After each reflection, say one Hail Mary.

Day 1

Dear Blessed Mother, we know that every human being is sacred, especially in the eyes of your Son. We pray that the people within our communities and country come to understand that every child is a blessing. As we ponder this, let us imagine the tiny baby who has just begun to develop.

In this first month, he is growing so rapidly. His organs are forming. His blood vessels are developing. Though he is smaller than a grain of rice, his beautiful tiny heart is already beating, and it’s already so full of love for his mother. Today, please pray that his mother loves and protects him throughout her pregnancy. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 2

Dear Heavenly Virgin Mary, you know what it’s like to have a baby growing inside you. You know the fear, the joy, the worry, and the hopes of new motherhood. We thank God that this baby has continued to grow.

In this second month, he is now just over half an inch. His eyelids and ears are beginning to form. You can even see the tip of his tiny nose. His arms and legs have formed, and his fingers and toes are growing. This is truly an amazing miracle! Though he cannot be seen, he most definitely exists. And he is truly loved—by you, by your Son, and hopefully by his mother. Please ask your Son to watch over him and protect him as he continues his remarkable growth. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 3

Dear Holy Mother of God, keep this beautiful growing baby under your mantle of protection. It’s only his third month, but he has come so far already! He is now about two inches long and is starting to move! Two inches is still so tiny and vulnerable, but the size does not matter because this baby is a human being who even now is starting to have hopes and dreams.

We know he was created in the image and likeness of your Son. And we know that God holds all of His children close to His heart. This baby is no different. Please watch over this sweet child and his mother. Help strengthen the bond between them and help her imagine with love the amazing life she will have with her child. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 4

Oh Holy Mother of God, help us to understand the miracle that exists as this amazing child continues to grow. It’s now his fourth month; he is over four inches long and weighs about 3.5 ounces. He can blink this month! If we could see him on a sonogram, we would be in awe! He even has fingerprints now, further proving that he is a unique and unrepeatable person.

Dear Mary, please watch over the mom and baby. And help those who do not believe in the sanctity of life to come to understand that a preborn baby is a human being who has the same rights as those who are born. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 5

Dear Mary, this fifth month is an exciting one! The mom can now feel her baby move! What a joyous event it is for the mom to feel the human being inside her kick and move around. He’s continuing to grow every day and now weighs about 10 ounces. And he’s a little longer than six inches. He can do adorable things like make faces, yawn, and even suck his thumb. He’s already starting to develop his personality!

Please pray for the safety of this baby. Pray that his mother sees the value in his life and protects him with every ounce of her being. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 6

Holy Mother of God, this amazing baby is growing so much! Now in his sixth month, he weighs over a pound. And he can even hear sounds outside the womb! His mother will feel him move more, and he may even get the hiccups sometimes. Though he is still so tiny, he is gaining new skills every day.

Please pray that his mother continues to keep him safe, that she protects him, and that she understands the gift that has been given to her. And please pray that she has support when she needs it. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 7

Dear Heavenly Mother, the baby has grown so much in the last month. In this seventh month, he is now about two-and-a-half pounds, and he is moving so much more. Every time he moves, his mom smiles and pats her belly. She is happy, but she is also sometimes filled with worry—worry about caring for him, worry about being a good mom, worry about the challenges of this new phase of her life.

Please fill her with strength and self-confidence. Help her understand that there are places she can go for help if she needs it. Guide her to these places when she feels overwhelmed. And please continue to protect this sweet baby. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 8

Dear Blessed Mary, we continue to witness the ongoing miracle of this growing baby. Now in his eighth month, he is growing by leaps and bounds. He weighs almost four pounds and is losing some of the wrinkles he has had as he gains more fat. From this point until delivery, he will gain up to half of his birth weight! It’s so exciting to watch this rapid growth. Yet we know that the mother’s fears may be getting more intense now, as the baby’s birth is so near.

Please pray for her continued strength. Pray that she increases her bond with the baby so that, when she sees his adorable face in the delivery room, she will set aside all her fears and just feel the immense joy of knowing she helped create this beautiful child. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Day 9

It is almost time for the baby to be born! He has continued to grow in height and weight. His brain has developed rapidly. His lungs are almost fully developed. When he will be born is usually a surprise, but one every mother anticipates with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Please keep both the mother and the baby in your prayers as they enter the final phases of pregnancy. Help the mother stay calm and focused on the arrival of her sweet baby. Protect the baby as he finishes growing and makes his way into the world. And bless them as they begin their new lives together. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hail Mary…

Babies are an immense blessing. We hope this novena has helped you focus on the developing baby and his incredible worth and value. It is something many in our world do not want others to see. It is therefore our responsibility to teach it.

Pray this novena regularly for mothers to understand the sanctity of human beings. And share this novena with your friends and family, for we have faith in Christ’s words when He said: “If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
